Panaway Whipped Body Butter

Old Man Winter is a jerk! The cold weather and the snow shoveling that comes with it makes my joints achy and stiff. I needed a way to warm up my bones this week and so I turned to one of my favorite essential oil blends, Panaway, for some help. According to the Young Living site “PanAway® was created by Gary Young following a severe injury to the ligaments in his leg. Containing wintergreen essential oil, which is often used for massage, PanAway is soothing to the skin while providing comforting warmth to muscles after exercise.” I needed a way to really work it into my skin and so I decided to whip up one of these super quick and easy blog recipes for whipped body butter. Ha!

What I discovered is that whipped body butter is not really quick or easy nor does it turn out like the pictures on pinterest. At least in my house. Maybe I did something very wrong but none of the recipes I tried worked out for me. They were all either too greasy or too hard.

So I set out to come up with my Panaway DIY Recipe. I wasted a lot of ingredients and oils in the process but finally have something that works for me.

Warning (or things I may have done that you shouldn’t):

  • Do NOT attempt this as your first DIY oily craft. It’s really not for beginners.
  • Do NOT attempt this without a stand mixer….I have no idea how people are making whipped body butters with hand mixers.
  • Do NOT leave out the beeswax. It’s essential to keeping it together in the jar.
  • Do NOT mix your oils in until you have tested it on your skin and like it.
  • Shea butter stinks once heated. Use it only if you are OK with that smell and get the cold pressed type which stinks less.
  • Fractionated coconut oil is way too greasy.  This is the liquid form of coconut oil that you can buy. It’s not an OK substitute.
  • Do not assume what works for me will work for you. Whipped body butter is a hard thing to get right because everyone has different levels of greasiness they find acceptable. I am OK with my hands being greasy for a few minutes after applying but then I want that feeling to go away. This one does that for me.

In a double boiler (if you don’t have one put a metal or glass bowl on top of a boiling pot of water) melt together the cocoa butter and beeswax pellets. Add the coconut oil in when the other mixture is about 1/2 way melted as they take longer. Stir constantly. Once all three are melted and mixed nicely remove from heat and let cool on counter for about 10 mins. Place mixture in fridge for about 30 mins. You need to watch this because it quickly hardens. This is what you are looking for.

If it gets too hard let it sit out on the counter for a few hours to soften. Honestly, the “right” one should have sat up maybe a minute or two longer. I found getting this part right to be the most frustrating.

Transfer mixture to stand mixer and turn it on high for 8 minutes stopping occasionally to scrape the sides.  Poke a hole in Vitamin E capsule and squeeze the liquid into the mixture at this time if you choose to use it. It should start to look like this. It’s a lot like making frosting.

Test the consistency at this point. If you like it add the oils. Remember it will be a little more melty (its a word) because of the heat from whipping.  I added 25 drops Panaway to beat Old Man Winter but you could really add any Young Living oil that you like. Store in an airtight jar. It should be fine for a few months stored this way if it lasts that long! This one will be firm in the jar but melts well on skin contact. You should not be expecting the consistency of your favorite store brand body butter and for heavens sake be careful what you touch while it is soaking in.
