Time to Register for the SAT

February 19, 2018 by barb

Now that we have discussed why you should have your student take the SAT and how to prepare for the SAT, the next step is to REGISTER FOR THE SAT.  The next opportunity to take the SAT is March 10, 2018. The regular registration deadline is February 9 which means you need to get registered right now. Some Common Questions/Concerns From Parents When Registering Their Students for the SAT How many times should my teen take the SAT? We recommend students test at least twice, once in the spring of their junior year and once in the fall of their senior year, and no more than four times. 67% of students who test again improve their score the second time. I have heard my student shouldn’t take the test twice in case they don’t do as well. 2 out of 3 students improve their scores when they retake the SAT.  And here's more good news: Research shows that students who spend 20 hours on Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy gain an average of 115 points from the PSAT/NMSQT to the SAT. I have heard the SAT is harder if you take it later in the year. The College Board makes sure every version of the SAT is the same level of difficulty. I have heard the SAT is only ...

How to Clean Your Keurig Without Chemicals

How to Clean Your Keurig Without Chemicals

When was the last time you cleaned the inner workings of your Keurig? Did you know that you needed to? The commercial cleaners out their have some NASTY chemicals in it. This post will teach you how to clean your Keurig without chemicals. How to Clean Your Keurig Without Chemicals This is what I do once a month and it works well for us. Adjust for your machine and comfort level. ☕️ Fill water reservoir half way with white vinegar. ☕️ Add 1/2 cap Thieves cleaner-adjust down as you need to. As you can see I have a commercial size machine (we take our coffee seriously) ☕️ Fill rest of reservoir with water ☕️ Run as many brew cycles as it takes to empty that reservoir ☕️ Refill tank with just water and brew that til fully empty 3 more times through. You are basically just trying to get rid of any possibility of an after taste in your drinks. If you don’t regularly clean out your tank, google it and be prepared to be disgusted. Then get out your Thieves cleaner. If you need to get started with Thieves you can buy a Premium Starter Kit from Young Living that has all the Thieves you would ever need! AND I'll give you $25 back on your purchase, just like if you were buying ...

Preparing For the SAT

January 23, 2018 by barb

Prepare for the SAT

A few weeks ago I talked about the advantages of taking the SAT. Now that you have made the decision to sign your student up, let’s talk about the best way to start preparing for the SAT.   How should my student prepare for the SAT? Your student should be at ease with the new SAT as it focuses more on what they do in class every day. The obscure SAT vocabulary that we, as parents, grew up with are gone! And, there isn’t a penalty for guessing wrong, meaning they should take that chance and guess because they won’t lose points. The content of the test is more familiar and straightforward. Should I hire a private tutor to do test preparation activities? There is no need! Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy is 100% free and personalized for each student. The College Board (the makers of the SAT) teamed up with Khan Academy created an online study platform with thousands of practice questions with instant feedback, video lessons, practice tests, study tips, and more! A recent study shows that students who practice for 20 hours on Khan Academy gained an average of 115 points from the PSAT/NMSQT to SAT compared to those students who did not use Official SAT ...

Why Should My Teen Take the SAT?

December 21, 2017 by barb

SAT Test Information

These days, there is a lot of pressure to do everything “right” and one group really feeling that pressure is families with kids thinking about college. The choices of which schools to visit, which tests to take, where to apply….it all gets to be TOO MUCH. I hear you, friends, I have been there and as I sit here now, with a Senior in COLLEGE, I do have some advice for those of you just starting this journey.   First and foremost-let’s talk about the money. While little Sally and Johnny are worried about what the dorm rooms look like, let’s face it, as parents we are worried about how we are going to pay for it all.   My son’s high school counselor suggested he take the ACT and so that’s what he did. What I didn’t realize was that the College Board and SAT connects students/families to over $180 – I think the most recent number now is $220K million in scholarship dollars each year. Who doesn’t need help paying for college? There are other factors about the SAT that I wished I’d known.  For instance, did you know there is no penalty for guessing wrong on the SAT? This is a fairly new development within the scoring of the test and is a huge advantage! ...
