The F Word

July 23, 2011 by barb

Right now I would love to hear a doctor say that word. F. Fibromyalgia. As strange as that sounds, I am at a point where Fibro would be such a blessing to hear. I was fairly certain going into all this that I would hear the doctor say the F word and I found myself struggling with it. Mostly because fibro is what they say when your body constantly feels like a truck ran you over or someone randomly lights your limbs on fire. But they cant REALLY find anything to explain it. It feels sort of fake. Like its a word used to pat you on the head and send you out the door. Cause there isn't really a definitive test for fibro like there would be for so many other conditions. And I know that is part of the problem with diagnosing conditions like this. Don't get me wrong, I do understand that fibro is a very real thing and those living with it for years have faced such unfair stigmatizisms. And I do understand that I have all the tell tale signs and symptoms. Google diagnosed me long before the doctor did. I do understand that how I feel is summed up by the word fibromyalgia. And so I went in ready to hear the F world. But it didn't happen like that. The doctor saw something ...

My Children Don’t Deserve Forks

July 13, 2011 by barb

my red forks

Last week I was having lunch with Emily, Susan and Karin. The subject got around to the new IKEA opening in Centennial soon. If you live in the Denver area, you know this is quite the talked about event. I casually mentioned I was so excited because now my family will finally be able to have new forks. I got 3 very strange looks. I had to explain that my children don't deserve forks and so I was waiting for IKEA to open to buy a cheap, new set. I have been waiting about 6 months. I guess that sounds a bit odd when you hear it out loud. Forks around here are that straw that broke mamas back. We never have forks when it is time to set the table! Why is this? They can't all be in the dishwasher right? Well, yes, when you only have 4 forks apparently they can all be in the dishwasher at the same time. We didn't start out with 4 forks. I swear at one point we had 3 full sets. So where in the H E Double Hockey Sticks did 20 forks go? I honestly have no idea! Do you? Apparently the boys don't either. If I had to guess I would say they have been thrown away during clearing the table laziness. In a missing-fork-induced mom rage while yielding one of the 4 fork ...

Raising Service Oriented Kids

July 11, 2011 by barb

summer of service button

When I hear the words 'service' thoughts of high school community projects and church activities pop into my head. But service doesn't have to big to make a difference does it? It's been a tough year around here as you all know so when Carissa asked me to get involved in VolunteerSpot Summer of Service, I thought "What the heck am I going to write about? We haven't really done anything as a family this year that is post worthy". Which is why it has taken me to the actual day it was due to write this. I can't say my kids have fed the homeless or built a habitat for humanity this year. They just haven't. But do we help others? Absolutely. I just don't think of it as 'service'. We expect it of our kids. We expect our kids to help someone with their groceries,  lift something heavy or hold the door for an over burdened mom. We expect them to recycle their clothes through Goodwill, give away old toys, and clean up their environment when they see trash. In essence, we expect them to be of service whenever and however they can. Maybe that is because Jesuit principle of being men and women for others pervade who my husband and I are as people, have been raised and how we raise ...

Triberr-Blog Sharing on Steroids?

July 3, 2011 by barb

triberr image

Last week my friend @lucretiapruitt clued me in, as is usually the case, about a great new reach multiplying tool I needed to know about- Triberr. I spent the better part of this am checking it out and figuring out what it is about and why I should care. As this moves more out of beta and into the mainstream you are likely to start getting twitter dm's asking you to join a triberr tribe. So consider this your heads up-a quick and dirty explanation of what this is all about. What is Triberr: What is Triberr? Simply put it is a way to have your blog post links retweeted via twitter Who retweets my links? People in your tribe. Who is in my tribe? You start off in a tribe of the person who invited you. It's up to them who is in the group. Can I make my own tribe? Once you are invited into a tribe you can then create 3 other tribes that you lead. How many people are in a tribe? The default is 7 (free) but the tribe leader can expand the group by paying 'bones'-triberr currency (which you can earn or buy through paypal) Do I have to retweet other peoples links? Yes. That is how the love gets spread. You can set your mode to not auto tweet your tribal stream if you are the ...

A Bit About Me…

I truly love the wonderful chaos of motherhood, but as my kids grew, I started craving a different kind of pace and a sense of calm I couldn't quite find.

Moving to the coast, which is my happy place, really changed how I live the day to day. Now, I just try to bring more calm into our days, even though they're still pretty busy.

It's not about making life perfect. It's just finding some balance and little bits of peace in the middle of the happy hustle, letting the salt air work its magic on the chaos.

Knock, Knock! Anyone home?

I no longer participate in PR campaigns of any type. I consider this blog to be in retirement but here for anyone who would like to read. I started this journey in 1998 with a company I named “Chaotic Communications”. I am so happy to have lost that chaotic feeling. Today I have rebranded that life and work to simply “Indigo Ink“. You can click that link to find my latest projects.
