The Ultimate College Essentials Packing List
Move-in day sneaks up fast. Here’s the dorm essentials checklist, organized the same way you’ll actually pack it — box by box. Whatever your kid’s college needs, it’s somewhere in here.
Bedding & Room Setup
- Twin XL sheet sets (2) -these Hypoallergenic Hotel Luxury Bedding have a neat side pocket for holding small things like remotes or glasses.
- Mattress pad or topper
- Mattress protector
- Comforter or duvet – lots of colors available in this style
- Bed pillows + pillowcases
- Throw blanket – some compare this to another fairly expensive brand. Lots of colors.
- Decorative pillows – whatever goes with your theme. I thought these were sure to bring a smile on hard days
- Body pillow
- Bed risers, if allowed
- Bed skirt or under-bed cover
- Headboard or wall cushion
- Bunk buddy or bed shelf — this is a must-have shelf for any kid who plans to loft their bed. Sturdy, won’t fall off, and almost every kid in my son’s freshman dorm had one. Perfect place for a phone, a drink, a remote, even a book when they’re in bed.
- Hanging bed caddy / hooks
- Area rug – make sure to get a washable one!
- Full-length mirror – get one that hangs over the door
- Blackout curtains – these are great because they are adhesive. No drilling or tools needed.
- Bedside table or small cart
- Clip-on or standing lamp — they need a lamp up in that lofted bed if they’re going to study. These are flexible so they can point the light where they need it, and they come in colors to match the room theme.
- Small fan — this one works as a floor fan, desk fan, or oscillating fan on a bedside table. It’s portable, comes with a remote, and works while it’s charging.
- Humidifier
Storage & Organization
- Hangers
- Shoe rack or organizer
- Over-the-door organizer
- Closet organizers
- Storage bins or boxes
- Under-bed storage containers
- Storage ottoman / cube — Fabric ottoman, hollow for storage, with an outer pocket that fits a laptop or phone when leaving the room. It won’t keep it safe, but it keeps it out of sight — turn the pocket side toward the wall. Doubles as extra seating.
- Drawer organizers
- Makeup or jewelry organizer
- Command hooks + strips — you can hang anything with this line of hooks. The best part: at the end of the school year they remove easily, with no damage, so no hefty bill from Residence Life. I buy these in every color, weight, and hook style. The velcro strips work for pictures and light framed posters too.
- Strong double-sided tape (for posters) — perfect for posters, twinkle lights, and light decorations.
- Wall hooks
- Push pins or magnets
- Laundry basket / hamper — hang it from a Command Hook to keep it off the floor.
- Tool kit
- Reusable tote bags
- Weekender or duffle bag — fold-up bags store flat and slide right inside other luggage, useful for the trip home when they’re carrying more one way than the other.
Study & Desk Supplies
- Laptop + charger
- Long charging cords for electronics — iPhone or Android
- Power strip / surge protector — the 8-foot cord on this one is perfect.
- Extension cord, if allowed — gets the fan, light, and phone charger all the way up to the lofted bed. The slim design works behind dressers, desks, or any outlet a bigger piece of furniture is blocking.
- Computer mouse, if used
- Headphones or earbuds
- Blue Tooth speaker + charger — great for music in their room, lectures, or podcasts while multitasking. Staying on a color theme? These cute speakers blend right into the room decor.
- Hard drive backup
- Backpack — same as every other school year, they’ll need a new one. Textbooks are heavy, and most days they’re also carrying snacks, a laptop and charger, even a change of clothes for the gym. Worth investing in a good one.
- Notebooks + folders
- Planner / calendar
- Pens, pencils, highlighters
- Sticky notes + note cards
- Stapler + staples
- Tape + paper clips
- Scissors + ruler
- Desk lamp or USB lamp
- Desk / drawer organizers
- Bulletin or dry erase board
- Printer + ink, if needed
Kitchen & Snack Station
- Mini fridge — look for one with a separate freezer, perfect for a pint of ice cream or a frozen meal. Check the dorm’s maximum size and wattage rating first. Grab a box of baking soda for odor control and a few magnet clips for the front.
- Microwave — Super cute retro one. Check what the dorm allows before buying.
- Fridge cart or shelf — my favorite find. The drawers underneath hold plastic silverware, paper plates, napkins, and cups.
- Mini Coffee Maker for late-night study sessions, or the kid who just can’t wake up. K-cups make a great addition to care packages too. Grab a holder for them so they don’t end up all over the room. Or go the Keurig system route, though that means shipping coffee, tea, or hot chocolate occasionally — a single-cup coffee maker works too if you’d rather skip the pods.
- Rapid ramen cooker – Otherwise known as a Hot Pot. quick way to make ramen, oatmeal or heat soup in one bowl, and it turns out right every time.
- Bowls, plates, cups + mugs
- Silverware or reusable utensils
- Paper plates + napkins
- Water bottle — most campuses have water bottle filling stations everywhere now. Get one with a clip so it can hook onto a backpack.
- Water filter pitcher
- Travel coffee mug / tumbler — especially worth it for a cold-weather school. This Contigo is leakproof, so it can ride in the outside pocket of a backpack.
- Blender bottle — great for protein shakes or mixing flavored water packs.
- Snack organizer or crate
- Food storage containers
- Tupperware
- Chip clips
- Dish soap + sponge — pump style does double duty for hands too.
- Dish towels
- Paper towels
- Coffee, tea, hot chocolate + snacks — start looking around Prime Pantry so you’re set up for drop-shipping groceries and smaller items.
Bathroom & Personal Care
- Robe
- Bath towels (2-4)
- Hand towels + washcloths
- Shower shoes / flip flops — showers. Enough said. In a cold-weather area, they’re hard to find once winter hits, so grab a few pairs ahead of time. The anti-microbial ones are worth seeking out.
- Shower caddy
- Bath mat, if needed
- Toothbrush + toothpaste
- Toothbrush holder
- Shampoo + conditioner
- Body wash / soap + hand soap
- Face wash + moisturizer
- Deodorant
- Razor + shaving cream
- Hair brush / comb + hair ties
- Hair dryer / straightener / curler
- Makeup + remover / wipes
- Tweezers + brow scissors
- Nail clippers + polish remover
- Cotton balls + Q-tips
- Contacts, case + solution
- Glasses
- Sunscreen
- Vitamins
- Prescriptions / medicine
- First aid kit + bandages
- Pads / tampons
- Toilet paper, if needed
Laundry & Cleaning
- Laundry detergent or pods — Tide Pods. Skip the liquid detergent and freshener. Pods make laundry simple.
- Dryer sheets or dryer balls
- Scent boosters
- Stain remover
- Wrinkle release spray
- Lint roller
- Steamer or small iron — same logic as the vacuum below.
- Small ironing board — if you buy a board, get the small one.
- Mini / stick vacuum — the debate’s ongoing over whether boys ever need one, but they always end up borrowing the girls’.
- Small broom + dustpan
- Disinfecting wipes — Clorox or Lysol wipes.
- Multisurface cleaner — Lysol spray. About four weeks in, my son became the biggest germophobe on the planet and started spraying everything for the rest of the year.
- Air / fabric freshener — Febreze.
- Room gel freshener — Freshwave works well.
- Trash bags
- Paper towels
- Tissues
- Hand sanitizer
Clothing & Weather
- Underwear
- Socks
- T-shirts + tank tops
- Jeans + shorts
- Leggings / yoga pants
- Sweatpants
- Sweatshirts / hoodies
- Cardigans + sweaters
- Workout clothes
- Dresses or formal outfit
- Swimsuit
- Casual shoes
- Sneakers
- Sandals or flats
- Boots
- Light jacket
- Rain jacket
- Winter coat
- Scarf, hat + gloves
Documents & Safety
- Driver license or ID
- Student ID
- Insurance cards
- Car insurance + registration
- Banking info / checks
- Birth certificate copy
- Social Security card / copy, if required
- Emergency contact list
- Medical info + prescription list
- Campus-approved safety item
- Umbrella
- Copies saved digitally
Dorm Decor & Comfort
- Photos or wall prints
- String / decorative lights
- Throw pillow covers
- Cozy blanket
- Small plant or faux greenery
- Small trash can
- Ottoman or pouf
- Futon/Couch Bed These are great if you can loft the bed (many schools offer that set up). If they don’t and it’s allowed, these can be a great investment in doubling the space of the room essentially. Amazon carries a few college-team fabric covers, but selection is limited — worth checking if the school is a big one.
- Blackout sleep mask
- Ear plugs
- Board games or cards
- Personal keepsakes
Tech & Electronics
- Phone + charger
- Laptop stand, if wanted
- Charging station
- Batteries
- Alarm clock
- TV or streaming device, if allowed
- Camera or compact tripod
- Small safe / lock box
- Flashlight
- Portable power bank
- Cord Clips keep charging cords organized and off the floor. Stick them right where they’re needed.
- Extra charging blocks
Don’t Forget Extras
- Umbrella
- Kleenex / tissues — for Mom and Dad. Drop-off day will need it, especially with a long drive home and an empty seat.
- Sunglasses
- Water bottle
- Reusable mug / cup
- Band-Aids
- Ear plugs
- Batteries
- Reusable shopping bag
- Sleeping bag or guest blanket
- Weekend bag
- Extra snacks
Also worth packing, no checklist slot needed: stamps and stationery, just a few. Anything bigger than a letter, they can usually send from the school’s business center.
What have I forgotten? There’s always more to a dorm essentials checklist than one post can hold. Drop a comment if there’s something you’d add. Once they’re settled, it’s a good time to start planning the first care package.
Now that you have all this great stuff, hop over and learn how to secure your stuff on campus.

Great List! Our future college kid is also packing her portable turntable and a few select vinyl albums to take with her. What are your thoughts on a safe? Or do dorms have safes like hotel rooms these days? I don’t know This is a new world for me.
LOL. She is awesome. Safes in rooms aren’t a thing that I know of. It’s a darn good idea that they install them though. The only thing he had stolen was a bedrail (prank) and in general I hear that most people feel their stuff is safe but that’s why I recommended the ottoman….why leave it sitting out in plain daylight to tempt someone or have it messed with?
